Soaking in the Sudz

By Paula Lloyd / The Fresno Bee
May 25, 2008

The stands at Chukchansi Park were nearly empty Saturday evening -- but the concourse was packed with beer drinkers. Thousands of them.

The 14th annual Sudz in the City Microbrewery and Music Festival transformed Chukchansi into a giant bar.

But it wasn't just a night of fun. The Downtown Association of Fresno hosted it to raise money to draw even more people downtown.

And there were booths for some organizations that had nothing to do with beer -- like the U.S. Army.

A $30 ticket ($25 in advance) included eight beers. Designated drivers paid $10 for the right to sample water or soda.

A few other facts:

4,000 Drinkers in attendance
2,604 Gallons of beer served
500 Hot dogs sold
143 Designated drivers
42 Beer booths
1 Makeup booth (Mary Kay)
4 Minutes to wait for the women's room
0 Minutes to wait for the men's room

Thank you!

…another successful SUDZ in the City! Microbrewers, volunteers and patrons join together in applauding this year's SUDZ!

Downtown Fresno was Rockin’

4000 party-goers enjoyed specialty beers from 18 different independent microbreweries with an additional 30 fan favorites on tap. Food vendors provided a grand selection of party-fare; including tri-tip sandwiches, tacos and hot dogs.

Then there was the music. The local favorites including headliner band Straight Up Sinners were tremendous. There were also some out of town surprises, Diesel Finger was one of this years crowd pleasers.

All capped off by fireworks, FIREWORKS, like the park with the mouse!

2008 Pre-event Press Release

Downtown Fresno’s streets are lined with “SUDZ in the City” banners in anticipation of the 14th Annual Microbrewery and Music Festival to be held on Saturday, May 24, at Chukchansi Park in Downtown Fresno.

The Downtown Association of Fresno has again selected Chukchansi Park, home of the Fresno Grizzlies and the Fresno Fuego, as the perfect location to celebrate music and microbrews. The gates open at 4:00 P.M. and the event lasts until the fireworks light the night sky at 9:00 P.M.

“As chair of SUDZ in The City for 2008, I have a few responsibilities – bring great beer, great vendors, and great music," said Sandra Dee Chaney, Downtown Association Vice-President and SUDZ in the City Chair. "The biggest responsibility is doing well enough that everyone wants to come back next year.”

While tasting a Sequoia Brewing Co. Moto Brew or a Firestone Brewery Double Barrel Ale or sampling a taco, lovers of food, brew and music can listen to a cavalcade of the best local musical talent. Headliners Straight Up Sinners lead the parade. Other featured bands run the gamut from blues and soul to rock and “redneck metal” – the blend of music that makes a good party. Those bands are Heavy Weather Band, Michael Robinson Band, Papa Bear and Company, Three Guys Playin’ the Blues, Diesel Finger, Double Doors, and Paul Posas and the Strong Persuaders.

Rounding out the party are Fresno’s best food vendors that fit right into the great atmosphere of music and brew. Whether looking for the best tacos in town, fantastic pizza or delicious tri-tip, you’ll find mouth-watering selections.
